Carl come on down!
Can anyone suggest where I may purchase some old BT telegraph poles
in/around Leeds?
Best bet is probably anywhere dealing in "Architectural Salvage". Can't
think of too many off hand in Leeds, but you could try Andy Thornton's at
Greetland.

And remember the Grundys may have to dismantle their pole barn so check
your situation before erection.

Tried emailing BT to find out where to get their old telegraph poles, but no
reply as yet.
I'll keep an eye on 'Yeller' & 'Adtrader' and phone a few salvage yards. I
need about 20 to form part of a retaining wall structure in the garden.

Cheers for replies so far,
Carl.

PS Who are the Grundys?

PS Who are the Grundys?
The real reason for listening to the Archers, of course!

Also you could phone all the Timber Recyclers in your local Yellow pages
phone book. One of them will know where the poles are going.

You don't listen to the Archers?!

The built a pole barn without permission. They might have to take it
down.

They aren't local but if it's of any use I came across:

while looking for a supplier of railway sleepers.

Thanks.
The poles collected around West Yorkshire are taken to the Pole Stack
in Wakefield. You used to be able to go and buy poles but you had to
collect them yourself and if you wanted them cut to size you also
needed to do that yourself.

The poles are treated with a carcinogenic wood treatment and are now
classified waste. They are apparently unsuitable for domestic use and
I believe that very shortly you will not be able to buy them - I am
also told that the same restriction applies, or will apply to railway
sleepers for similar reasons. But I stand to be corrected.

Thanks for all your replies.

Ewan, do you have a contact number or address for the 'Pole Stack' in Wakey?
I've tried search engine to find it to no avail.

Thanks,
Carl.

:-) I live the other side of what was the highest standard gauge railway
in Britain (or so I'm told) so rebuilding that would be
interesting...but it is for raised beds. I like the idea of sleepers
because of their bulk and appearance but we may yet go for 12 by 2 and a
little more woodwork.

Also, old sleepers tend to have all sorts of crap (oils and tars) in
then and so there is a decision to be made on whether to use old and
line or use new, treated sleepers. On top of that we have to design
everything with the possibility of siting a new wind turbine next year.
